Spicewood Country School was established in 1980 to offer something special in childcare. Spicewood’s unique setting, with grazing horses on the grounds, creates the atmosphere of a friendly farm, while close to the heart of city life.

Experiences with animals, daily music classes, and room to grow and explore enhance both our preschool program and summer day camp. Family-friendly, cozy and quaint describe an atmosphere where good values are modeled and fond memories are made. Spicewood has truly had a positive impact on the learning and self-esteem of thousands of Austin’s children, and stays full by the recommendations of their proud parents.

The director of both the school and camp at Spicewood Country is Mary Beth Bird. One of the owners and founding partners, Mary Beth has been teaching and directing since 1970, when she graduated from UT Austin with a B.S. in Elementary Education at the age of 20. Her experiences with leading children include teaching first grade and serving as grade level chairman, teaching preschool classes and directing a private church day school, directing children’s choirs, and facilitating curriculum studies through Southwest Educational Development Lab.
